Our Philosophy

Far more than just a  structure made of clay,  grass and wooden poles, the African mud hut embodies a wealth of wisdom, craftsmanship and cultural significance that transcends time and borders.in our fast paced world filled with towering skyscrapers and high tech buildings, it is easy to overlook the quiet beauty and practical brilliance of this humble structure  . In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the MWF, I will share the 10 defining features of the African mud hut that inspired me to name my organization Green Hut, an institution that i founded in 2020 to act on the pressing environmental challenges in Zimbabwe

The African Mud hut is made of inexpensive locally sourced materials

Poses great strength and resilience with its walls known to last for 50 to 100 years

Harmonious with nature exhibiting energy efficiency and a lower carbon footprint

Despite my inexperience as an NGO leader, four years ago I rallied a group of young, less-seasoned professionals from my neighborhood to accompany me on my quest to become an advocate for environmental sustainability. An excellent example of making do with what you have to achieve your goals, we used the social media platforms available to us to assemble a network of stakeholders from the bottom up. Green Hut, like the mud hut before it, rests on the acknowledgment of the resiliency and resilience of young leaders as well as their many underappreciated but highly valuable qualities, abilities, and talents that could be put to use in creating a sustainable society.

Beautiful drawings and writings

In 1988, mathematician Ron Eglash revealed that African hut designs use fractal mathematics, challenging early European assumptions that African architecture was random and primitive. At Green Hut, we prioritize community-led, homegrown solutions that might seem simple but are backed by careful planning and development. Mixing mud for building requires experimentation and practice, much like Green Hut’s approach of trial and error to create custom answers to environmental and climate challenges. Through creative methods, including beautiful wall drawings, Green Hut Trust raises awareness of the climate crisis by educating, empowering, and equipping communities to become active problem solvers and innovators in addressing climate change.

The circular shape of the hut

It is symbolic in most, if not all, indigenous African cultures where important gatherings are held in a circle  , typically around a fire—to share stories and have meaningful conversations. The enchantment of the circle lies in the fact that there is no telling a beginning or end, which in turn promotes the unrestricted exchange of ideas a concept that my organization is embracing to bring the best of solutions and to stay connected to the communities we serve and the environment we are protecting

Changing the narrative

African mud huts are associated with poverty, yet ironically, the grass-thatched architecture is now used in the most opulent hotels around the world because of its many modern-day advantages, such as natural air conditioning, solitude, and serenity. Similar to how the humble and simple african hut is contributing to modern day architecture and has been adopted world wide, our small organization has attracted international funding, influenced climate policies from local to international level at the COP. Despite the many challenges, our communities are slowly recognising the urgent need to act on the climate crisis by collaborating with us through projects.

The simplicity in its construction is representative of how sometimes the most complex of challenges can be solved by a simple solution.

Climate change and environmental work is considered technical and requires a certain level of expertise . By applying a simple approach to our programming we are on a mission to engage all dispute their level of expertise as we raise an environmentally conscious citizenry.

Bringing people along

In the construction of the hut, everyone is welcome to participate, which is what we do at Green Hut by providing an inclusive environment for diverse people to engage in activities such as cleanup campaigns, tree plantings, and recycling initiatives. We have created an open-door policy

These 10 defining features are  testament to the ingenuity, resilience, and resourcefulness of its builders. Its simplicity, sustainability, and adaptability are not limitations but rather strengths that offer valuable lessons to all who are open to learning from its timeless design. By looking beyond our preconceived notions of what a sound structure should look like, we can find inspiration in the humble mud hut and embrace the beauty of its form and function. Let us remember that true greatness lies not in extravagance or opulence, but in the harmony between nature, culture, and human creativity. – Written by Cinderella Ndlovu the Green Hut Founder for the Florida Gulf Coast University Mandela Washington Fellowship Ignite Talk.

Our Interests

Climate Adaptation and Mitigation innovations

Climate change disrupts natural, economic and social systems, disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities. Greenhut supports climate adaptation through integrated land, livestock, forest and fisheries management, promoting climate-smart agriculture, emission reduction, and literacy to enhance food security, resilience, sustainability and quality of life.

Environmental Education and Awareness

Environmental education drives sustainable lifestyles and equips communities with knowledge, skills, and attitudes to adapt to climate change. Greenhut empowers schools, farmers, and communities through trainings, environmental clubs, and conservation groups, fostering advocacy, protection, and solution-driven environmental stewardship.

Biodiversity Conservation

Biodiversity underpins healthy ecosystems that regulate climate and sustain soils, making it vital for all life. Greenhut advances conservation by restoring degraded landscapes, and implementing afforestation and reforestation initiatives to protect ecosystems and ensure long-term environmental resilience and sustainability.

Waste Management and recycling

Greenhut tackles global and local waste challenges by promoting reuse, recycling, recovery, and repurposing. Through education and trainings for recyclers, waste pickers, and monitors, alongside recycling services, we empower communities to manage waste sustainably, protecting health and the environment.

Sustainable Development

Greenhut empowers communities to lead sustainable development by building capacity in smart agriculture, renewable energy, and innovative water technologies. This approach strengthens environmental, social, and economic resilience, ensuring long-term sustainability and inclusive growth through active local participation and leadership.
